Description
Major Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with U.S. Customs for importing and exporting goods.
- Lead continuous negotiations with freight carriers to achieve annual cost reduction objectives.
- Coordinate cost reduction activities with warehouse personnel to ensure optimal flow of goods at lowest possible cost structure.
- Audit and approve for payment all freight invoices.
- Ensure proper and timely communication with domestic/international freight carriers in the areas of service commitments, pricing, and claims resolution.
Specific Responsibilities
- Assign and audit Tariff classification of merchandise using knowledge of the international Harmonized Tariff System (HTS), and detailed legal analysis of the General Rules of Interpretation (GRI), Customs rulings and practices.
- Assist in the implementation of legal compliance programs specifically tailored to the needs of our industry, including internal compliance reviews, the preparation of comprehensive manuals, internal training seminars and other services designed to ensure and document the exercise of reasonable care.
- Assist with process improvements and corrective actions, document procedures, and assist Customs Compliance Audits.
- Conduct post-entry audits to ensure that all import/export transactions meet customs requirements.
- Identify areas of non-compliance and implement practical solutions to improve compliance efforts
- Assist with application for certification under Customs Trade Partnership Against Terrorism and implement CTPAT Best Practices
- Oversee third party freight payment activities and interaction with Accounting.
- Review and approve for payment all freight invoices, both international and domestic, through extensive use of EDI.
- Initiate and follow through on all claims for shorts/damages with freight carriers.
- Assist with the classification of complete vehicles from Japan. Coordinate broker implementation and activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
EDUCATION:
Associate’s Degree (2 yr.) required. Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of 5 years experience in customs compliance, customs brokerage, and freight bill auditing.
SKILL:
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE:
- Computer skills, working knowledge of business software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint or equivalents).
- U.S. Custom Broker’s license strongly preferred.
